- "It looks like that machine carries fluid in those sacs. Not sure I want to find out what kind."
- ―Aloy, upon sighting a Freeze Bellowback
The Bellowback bears a very vague similarity to a theropod dinosaur (Spinosaurus or Baryonyx in particular), much like Thunderjaws and Watchers, lacking forelimbs. Its torso and head also have a slight resemblance to a pair of bellows used for blowing oxygen into a fire.
Bellowbacks were created by GAIA in order to provide controlled burns to tracts of land, if necessary. They were used to burn away dead or dying vegetation so that new vegetation could grow in its place, as well as renewing and enriching the soil.
Freeze Bellowbacks, on the other hand, seem to be designed to counteract Fire Bellowbacks by containing controlled burns.
The Freeze Bellowback shoots out long-range arcing ice projectiles that can hit Aloy from afar. The ice can deal significant damage and have a large splash radius. Therefore it is necessary for the player when and how to dodge.
The Freeze Bellowback can also charge forward and swipe its mouth at Aloy, spreading ice around the area. This deals a small amount of damage, but can damage Aloy over time and slow her movement speed.
- During development, Freeze Bellowbacks were originally named "Cryo Bellowbacks". The original name is still used in the description for the Shadow Sling Tutorial.
