The Rockbreaker is a subterranean Acquisition Class Machine. Highly durable and capable of rapid movement on the surface or underground, Rockbreakers are one of the largest and most formidable Machine types.
A Rockbreaker is built for high-speed underground movement and aggression. Rockbreakers are quadrupedal, possessing four large, clawed arms. The primary purpose of these arms is for digging. However, along with undulating movements of its body, they allow a Rockbreaker to crawl rapidly along aboveground as well. Its mouth parts are composed of three large, circular grinders. It carries a large fuel sac filled with Blaze on its underside to power it. On its dorsal side, at the base of its tail, is an exhaust port for the emission of exhaust gases generated within the Machine's body. Their high durability is presumably due to their design for subterranean operation. As such, they are able to sustain large amounts of damage before being destroyed.
Like all Machines with the exception of the Tallneck, Rockbreakers will attack a human on becoming aware of his/her presence. Rockbreakers are sensitive to sound, and will attack any point on the surface of the ground from whence come vibrations such as an arrow strike, blast explosion, or footsteps. A Rockbreaker can tunnel faster than an athletic human such as Aloy can run. So prodigious is its digging capability that it is able to effortlessly 'dive' into the ground, tunnel underground and resurface just as easily. However, it cannot tunnel through rock. It engages in frequent melee attacks such as rapidly tunneling toward an enemy, then propelling itself out of the ground to land on the enemy before 'diving' underground again. It also comes straight up under the enemy to engulf him/her in its mouth grinders. On the surface, it is capable of crawling at high speed after an enemy, again moving as fast as an athletic human can run, quickly gaining on him/her before launching itself to land on him/her. If the enemy is out of range of these attacks or is standing on rock, it is capable of hurling a stream of large boulders at him/her from its mouth.
As formidable as they are, Rockbreakers have weaknesses that may be exploited to eventually kill them. They are as follows:
- Digging arms - removal of these will prevent it from going underground. However, all four arms must be removed.
- Fuel sac - puncturing this will cause an explosion that causes significant damage. However, the explosion also damages anyone within the blast radius.
- Exhaust port - strikes on this component deal greater damage to the machine.
Initial use of the Ropecaster is not recommended, as the Rocbreaker can break the lines by going underground before enough lines are cast to restrain it. The same applies to any form of elemental ammunition such as Freeze, Shock, or Fire.
Since it uses sound to acquire an enemy's location, melee attacks from underground may be prevented by sneaking rather than running. The initial focus should be on removal of the digging claws, which disables its digging ability; Tearblaster Arrows will do this. However, the player should still be alert for its surface melee attack. Once its digging ability is disabled, the Ropecaster can then be used to restrain it. Precision arrows can then be repeatedly used against its exhaust port and/or its fuel sac. Once it breaks free of the lines, the Ropecaster should immediately be used again to restrain it to allow continued targeting of its exhaust port/fuel sac.
- The Rockbreaker shares many similarities with Nibelsnarf of the Monster Hunter franchise. Both have similar body shapes, methods of attack and movement, and a vulnerability to freezing/ice damage.
